I always thought Steve was a very special person and my sense of Steve was confirmed after reading the summary of his life accomplishments. I was not surprised to learn how much he gave of himself to others and organizations.
I always enjoyed our discussions of his work and accomplishments as an engineer.
His visits to my office were anticipated as it gave me an opportunity to spend time with this very kind, humble and caring person who exhibited a strong sense of family and love for his wife,Kathy.
It was a privilege to have known Steve and allowed to participate in his care over many years.

The last time I saw Steve we had a great visit in the isles of the grocery store. He was beaming, as usual, about his next adventure; moving into a new house recently purchased and entering another chapter in life. A man of many talents, I don't believe I have ever met anyone as generous with his time. As knowledgeable as he was, he maintained an infectious curiosity about things that made him a pleasure to be around. I'll miss you Steve. We all will.

Steve was one of the world's good guys. What I always appreciated about Steve (and Kathy) was that they always showed up for family occasions. One of my fondest memories of Steve is at a wedding of one of 1st Cousin Herb Slain's children. I spent as much time as I could with my two much older cousins and I felt like we were the "three amigos."

I'm sure Steve's deep love of his family came from his parents. When I was young, Grandma Abels lived in an apartment above the ceramic shop owned by Steve's parents, my Aunt Emma and Uncle Steve, in Queens Village, New York. I never knew I was one of 31 first cousins -- I just knew there were a lot. I'm sure it was Kathy who actually made the count. My sincere condolences to Kathy and their entire family. Steve will be sorely missed. 1st Cousin Ken

A small correction: the wedding was of one of 1st Cousin Herb Slain's grandchildren.

A not-so small addition: Aunt Emma would give the cousins beautiful ceramics on special occasions such as a choir boy for First Holy Communion. It remains a prized possession today.
