Catherine Smith Obituary

Catherine Elizabeth Smith, 85, lifelong Milford resident passed away at home on Tuesday, October 27, surrounded by family.  She was born on May 23, 1935 to the late Wilbur Miller and Lois Thomas Miller of Milford (of some of the early founders of Grace Baptist Church) and was predeceased by her husband Stewart Walter Smith.
She worked as a Nurse for 30 years both at Milford Hospital but mostly at Milford Ob-GYN where she was considered family and was well respected for her dependability even while battling a long and difficult illness.  She spent 15 years volunteering in the summers with the Christian Medical and Dental team in Jamaica working in field clinics with patients who otherwise would not have access to adequate healthcare.  She would gather boxes and boxes throughout the year of much needed medical supplies and medications as well as toys and dolls for the children.  She also volunteered her skills often at Singing Hills Christian Camp and Conference Center in Plainfield New Hampshire, sewing slip overs, curtains and adding her many crafting skills in any way that was needed.  Singing Hills was born of a mission and vision of her beloved sister and brother-in-law Marian and Warren Biebel, a Ministry that she loved.  She loved meeting the people there and had a wonderful sense of humor.
She loved gospel music and was very active in the Church Choir at Grace Baptist and was a soloist in the Community Gospel Choir.  After retiring she volunteered at the Milford Hospital Walk-in Clinic in a multitude of capacities.
She left a legacy of crafting (sewing, knitting, quilting, crocheting, embroidering, etc) with just about anyone she knew and loved.  Anyone she knew who became pregnant would inevitably receive an adorable hand knit baby sweater and or blanket.
As well as her many altruistic endeavors she and her husband loved to travel abroad as well as to many many Scottish Games up and down the eastern Seaboard.
She loved her Children, her Grand and Great Grandchildren as well as her Nieces and Nephews (with whom she had a very special relationship-they referred to her as “the Great One”).
She is survived by her daughter Deborah Smith and husband Santiago Contreras, her Sister Marian Biebel her Brother-in-law Warren Biebel, Grandchildren James Smith, Laura Buck and Jeffrey Smith, 3 Great Grandchildren as well as nieces and nephews, cousins and many friends.  She was predeceased by her son Donald Smith.
Friends and family are invited to attend a graveside service on Monday, November 2nd at 11:00 am in Milford Cemetery, Milford.  In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Singing Hills Christian Camp and Conference center.
