It is with heavy hearts that we announce the unexpected death of Mary Lou O’Connell of Milford, CT on Thursday, November 23, 2023 at the age of 77 years young.
Mary Lou was born June 6, 1946 in Holyoke, MA the youngest child to parents Delia (Dede) Harper and George E. O’Connell. She went to Ursuline Academy in Springfield, MA. Following high school she went to college in Washington, D.C. Mary Lou worked as an Executive Assistant to the District Attorney in North Hampton, MA for many years. In order to be closer to her family, upon retirement she moved to the Heritage Sound Condominiums in Milford where she served as the Secretary on the Board of Directors. Mary Lou volunteered at the Shubert Theater in New Haven. She more recently became a member of the Irish Heritage Club of Milford.
Mary Lou was a talented knitter and avid reader, never leaving home without her Nook. She was a keen shopper, whether it be early morning on Black Friday or a ‘quick’ trip to Costco. She always looked forward to her annual shopping vacation with friends Betsy, Donna, and Pat, first to Freeport, ME and then to Woodbury Commons in NY.
Family was most important to Aunt Mary Lou. She was dedicated to each and every one of us, and we felt her love and support daily whether it be a simple call or text, making her famous potato salad for a family gathering, or being our “Uber Driver”. Driving meant time with her family, especially her great nephew and nieces, who affectionately referred to her as ‘GRuber’ (great aunt Uber). Mary Lou was a proud ‘Great Great’, and a fixture at every family event. She was also affectionately known as Aunt Mimi by some of her grand nieces. She loved her Pinot Grigio with ice and lots of laughs. It is very ironic that Aunt Mary Lou left us on Thanksgiving Day as we are all incredibly grateful for her, the unconditional love she showed us, and the impact she had on all of our lives. She will be missed immeasurably.
Mary Lou was predeceased by her parents, brother George, sister in laws Joan and Mary Anne, and nephew Matthew. She is survived by her brother Jack, nephews and nieces John Jr. and wife Jennifer, Margaret and wife Katherine, George Edward and wife Lori, Maria, and George William and wife Karen; great nephew and nieces Ali and husband Nico, Lyddy and boyfriend Clinton, Katie-John, Jack III, Julia, and Audrey; and great great nephews Giovanni and Ollie. She is also survived by special O’Brien and Starsiak cousins.
A Memorial Mass will be celebrated on Friday December 1, 2023 at 11am at St Gabriel Church, Milford. Family and friends may visit from 8:30am - 10:30am prior to Mass at the GREGORY F. DOYLE FUNERAL HOME, 291 Bridgeport Avenue, Milford. Interment will be private.
