Nancy Jean Fugal Obituary

Nancy Jean Canfield Fugal, age 70, of Milford, beloved wife of 30 years to the late Jan Peter Fugal, MD, passed away peacefully on Saturday, January 22, 2022.

Nancy was born in Bridgeport on March 16, 1951 to the late Raymond Gray and Winifred Edna Doyle Canfield. A graduate of Jonathan Law High School Class of 1969, Nancy spent her life embracing many joyous moments and enduring challenging times. Nancy’s greatest joys were her husband, children, and grandchildren. She enjoyed vacationing every year in Alton Bay, New Hampshire, first with her own parents as a child, and then with her growing, blended family. Nancy was an avid reader and skillful writer, often sharing her book recommendations and thoughts with others. Hundreds of favorite books lined the shelves of her home, and her meticulous penmanship and crafty vocabulary were visible on research papers, personal letters, and holiday cards alike. Nancy had a child-like, silly side to her, in which her laughter was infectious. Nancy loved Christmas and making the holiday magical for those she loved and those in need, preparing numerous gifts for Jan to deliver on Christmas Eve to unsuspecting loved ones. She loved watching movies, sprawling out in front of a roaring fire in her stone fireplace, and latch-hooking in the living room, creating holiday decorations and ten personalized stockings for the fireplace. Nancy never turned down a delicious lobster roll or a bakery treat, and always loved cheering on her favorite teams, the Giants and Yankees. The thousands of pictures taken across seven decades tell the story of a beautiful, young woman who loved life, met a wonderful man who changed her world, created a beautiful family with memories to cherish, and endured far too many medical challenges that took its inevitable toll. Nancy has left a lasting impression on all those who knew her. The life lessons she taught directly, or that which were learned indirectly by watching her, will last a lifetime. Nancy is finally at peace now, rejoining loved ones who passed before, who were so terribly missed.

Nancy was also preceded in death by her daughters Ashlee Elisabeth Canfield Fugal and Sherri Lee Fugal Furce. Nancy leaves behind her sister Deborah Lynn Canfield O’Meara and her husband Frank of Orange, children Laurie Lynn Fugal Ott and her husband William of Milford, Howard Hugh Fugal and his wife Stephannie of West Greenwich, RI, Rebecca Jeanne Fugal Migliore and her husband John of Milford, Lisbeth Ane Fugal Greist and her husband Harold of Stratford, Edward Roy Fugal and his wife Patricia of Milford, Jan Peter Fugal II, DDS, and his wife Tabatha of Burnt Hills, NY, and Kurt Garrett Fugal and his wife Sherry of Guilford. She leaves behind twenty-two grandchildren: Olivia, Mackensie, and Ethan Ott; Gwynn and Aaron Fugal; Edwards and Hailey Greist; Christopher Piccoli, Christian, and Amber Furce; Danielle (Lukas) Bradley, Justin, and Jennafer Fugal; Tanner (Amber), Ashley (Justin) Bradshaw, Joshua, Cameron, and Liam Fugal; Tyler, Abigail, Nathan, and Lorren Fugal; and two great-grandchildren: Madilyn and Benjamin Bradley. She is also survived by son-in-law Robert Joseph Furce, sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, fourteen nieces and nephews, many extended family members, and dear friends throughout the years.
